The introduction of new
therapeutic modalities such as parenteral and
enteral nutrition support into clinical practice
has induced a great improvement in therapeutic
results in various kinds of catastrophic disorders.
The establishment of nutrition support, along
with the development of a multitude of diagnostic
instruments and appliances, has made accurate
metabolic monitoring possible, thereby leading
to the possibility of adequately controlling
metabolism of nutrients. Among a variety of
nutrients, amino acid mixture was closely in
investigated with regards to their metabolic
specificity to principal organs and their metabolism
in various morbid states. Amino acid infusion
is nowadays believed to be initialized not only
to supply the nitrogen source but also to improve
various pathophysiologic conditions.
Different types of amino
acid formulas are currently used in various
clinical situations. These include formulas
for patients with 1)hepatic failure 2)surgical
in jury or sepsis 3)renal failure 4)intestinal
failure 5)neonates (immaturity). In each of
these formulas, certain amino acids such as
branched chain amino acid (Ieucine, isoleucine,
valine), glutamine, arginine, cystine or taurine
are expected to play a role in metabolic control
of various disorders.
