The Taiwan Society of
Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (TSPEN) qualified
at least 54 hospitals in Taiwan to have good
nutritional support team and patients care.
The characteristic local nutritions in Taiwan
include local foods and enteral nutritional
diets. The Taiwanese or Chinese food is rich
in full nutrition as other Asian foods. The
enteral nutrition is widely used in most hospitals
in the island for years, and many general hospitals
or medical centers have designed their own formulas
for their patients. There are several local
nutritional sources or enteral formula diets
developed in Taiwan, which have been used in
most hospital for years. They include polymeric
formula, predigested formula for the patients
with short bowel syndrome, chronic pancreatitis
or post gastrointestinal surgery, high fat polymeric
formula for the patients with ventilator dependency
and immunomodulational formula for the patients
with high risk for infection. The polymeric
diet contains 16% of protein, 34% of fat and
50% of carbohydrate; the high fat formula contains
45% of fat and 39% of carbohydrate and 16% of
protein; the predigested formula contains 20%
of peptide, 15% of fat with 50% of MCT, 65%
of maltose. The immunomodulational diet is enriched
with arginine, glutamine and ?-3 fatty acid.
The above formulae are used as liquid nutritions
for hospital diets. The local nutrition formulae
are generally cheaper and more widely accepted
by local hospitalized and out patients compared
to the imported formulae in Taiwan. The difference
of complications and outcomes among them were
reported. The local nutrition in Taiwan provides
multiple and better choice of enteral formulae
for the hospitalized patients.
